Best Grass Seed for North Carolina Regions

Hey, if you’re lucky enough to live in North Carolina, you’re lucky enough! We’ve got the beach, the mountains, and everything in between. We’ve got great food (including Barbecue!) and plenty of activities to keep you busy. Among the choices you will have to make if you live here will be what type of grass is best for your lawn—and there are a few options.

First, let’s explain the different general categories of grasses. Cool season grass is often sown in the fall, stays green almost all winter, and greens up earlier in the spring. This grass does not looks as good in the summer heat. Warm season grasses thrive in the heat, go dormant early in the winter (at the first decent frost) and are much slower to green up in the spring. This type of grass is often planted as sod instead of as seed.

It is helpful to divide the state into geographical regions:

The Coastal Plains (The Beach): Because of the climate and soil conditions, this area does best with warm season grasses.

  • Bermuda
  • Centipede
  • Zoysia
  • St. Augustine

The Piedmont: Folks in the Piedmont (the area between the mountains and the coastal plains) can have either type of grasses, and often find a mix in their lawns.

Cool-season options include:

  • Tall fescue
  • Fine fescue
  • Perennial ryegrass
  • Kentucky bluegrass

Warm-season grass options are:

  • Bermudagrass
  • St. Augustine
  • Centipede
  • Zoysia

The Mountain Region: Lawns in the mountain region are typically going to be cool-season grasses.

  • Tall fescue
  • Fine fescue
  • Perennial ryegrass
  • Kentucky bluegrass

Plant the right grass at the right time for your climate and conditions. Get the best care you can for it—correct mowing height and frequency, proper fertilization at the appropriate time—and it will add to the beauty of your home. The best way to insure this is done is to hire a professional landscape maintenance provider. Southern Exposure Landscape Maintenance can take great care of your lawn for you, which will give you the time to go out and enjoy some delicious Carolina Barbecue!
