In the Beginning
In the summer of 1995, Pete’s grandfather presented him a great opportunity. His grandfather offered to match the amount of money he could earn over the course of a weekend. Pete gladly accepted the challenge and asked to borrow the mower. He went door-to-door offering to mow lawns, perform cleanups, and anything else these potential customers needed to get done. By the end of the weekend, Pete’s grandfather was sorry he hadn’t put a cap on the amount he would match and Pete discovered he had a passion for landscaping. That entire summer he spent his weeks maintaining lawns in his neighborhood. When Pete went off to college, he continued to spend his summers maintaining properties, gaining customers throughout the years and chose to major in business with the goal to have a flourishing landscaping business. Upon graduating from Appalachian State, he continued his education by taking various training and certification courses which he knew would be beneficial in setting his company apart from the competition. Today, Southern Exposure Landscape Management employs more than 25 skilled professionals that share Pete’s passion for beautifying the great outdoors. In 2006, the company moved out of Pete’s home and set up shop on a busy intersection in Summerfield in a historical building know as the Hillsdale Brick Store. Here, customers can wander around the property to gain ideas for outdoor kitchens, fire places and pits, koi ponds, lush landscaping and view over 50 varieties of pavers and wall material in various colors, styles and patterns installed throughout the 1.5-acre showroom. The one-stop-shop for all Commercial & Residential Landscaping elements on display, saves the client the trouble of visiting multiple locations to see what the end result can look like. The do-it-yourselfer can purchase pine needles and mulch from the materials yard as well as fire place and patio kits and all the material necessary to build Commercial & Residential Landscaping on their own.
Southern Exposure still has lawn maintenance as it’s core, maintaining both Commercial & Residential Landscaping properties, but over the years we have added to our service repertoire to meet the needs of our changing client. Southern Exposure now offers landscaping, hardscaping (kitchens, bars, patios, walks, stonework, etc.), drainage systems, outdoor lighting (automation and audio), design and winter services. Offering 3D design in addition to the conventional 2D layout has set Southern Exposure as the leader in Commercial & Residential Landscaping designs in the triad. We outpace our competitors in experience and hold more certifications than any other company in the area. Southern Exposure is the only current Belgard Authorized Contractor and Techo-Pro Authorized Contractor in our area. Our company also boasts the state’s only Certified Low Voltage Landscape Lighting Technician (CLVLT). Pete is also enrolled in AOLP’s 4 year lighting degree, Certified Outdoor Lighting Designer (COLD), which once completed would put him and the company as one of 25 Certified Outdoor Lighting Designers in the nation.
Commercial & Residential Landscaping has gained popularity and is an every changing industry as technology continues to advance. To commit more focus to this division, Southern Exposure launched a sister company called Southern Lights Landscape Lighting in 2009 due to the ever growing demand for landscape lighting. Southern Exposure had previously been installing lighting systems for more than a decade prior and felt the need to specialize and devote a major amount of time and energy to this service was necessary. Southern Lights is the triad’s most experienced and knowledgeable outdoor lighting company and offers the latest in automation integration, wireless controls, scene selection, specialty fixtures, and design. We believe in using light as an art form with minimal intrusion, yet huge impact of shaping the overall canvas of a yard. We have the ability to service, maintain, and install any size project, residential and commercial.

“My name is Pete Bryant the Founder, President and CEO of both Southern Exposure Landscape Management and Southern Lights Landscape Lighting. We are not a franchise or a large corporation with multiple shareholders. We are a small, locally owned business, and I am that local business owner. As I look back over the last 20 years of being in business, I am overwhelmed with feelings of incredible gratitude to my supportive family, my gracious God, great employees, and my loyal customers.”
